Summer Term in Class 4

During the Summer Term, our learning in Class 4 will initially centre around Grasby and the local area. Our exciting local history study will allow us to explore our community further. We will conduct field work along the Viking Way and use our surroundings to inspire our writing. Our class books - The Explorer, Journeys (the picturebook) and Shackelton's Journey - will complement our topic and take us on some epic journeys further afield.

Our Class Books

The Explorer

This adventure book starts with a bang and follows four children as their plane crashes into the Amazon rainforest leaving them stranded. It's action packed from the very beginning and a big hit with Year 5/6 readers!

Shackleton's Journey

This wonderfully illustrated book will guide us through the incredible achievements of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his history-making voyage to the Antarctic. It will provide us with lots of exciting facts to write about his landmark expedition.

Journey

This wordless picturebook and its beautiful illustrations will inspire both our art work and creative writing.

What will we be learning about in Class 4?

We are Readers

Daily whole class reading will take place focusing on key reading skills. As well as our class books, we will study a range of fiction and non-ficition texts linked to our journeys topic so that children are exposed to a broad reading diet.

We are Writers

Using our class books and history and geography learning as our inspiration, we will be developing our skills as writers by:

  • Writing a recount of our walk along the Viking Way.
  • Writing a persuasive letter to a local councillor.
  • Writing a narrative featuring a flashback.
  • Writing a biography of Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Active English

GPaS (Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling) will be covered through our Active English programme and linked into our daily English lessons.

Active Spelling

Spelling rules and the Statutory spellings for Years 5 and 6 will be covered daily through our Active Spelling sessions. The only spellings sent home will be the statutory Year 5/6 word list which children are expected to be able to spell by the end of Year 6 and use independently in their writing. Children will be tested on these words at the end of each full term and sent home with updated lists with their personalised target spellings.

We are Mathematicians

Maths will be taught from the White Rose programmes of study. This term both Year 5 and Year 6 will be developing their understanding of shape and position and direction.

We are Scientisits

Science will be taught from our White Rose Science programmes of study. This term we will be learning all about 'Light' and 'Animals Including Humans'.

We are Geographers and Historians

History and geography will centre all around the local area of Grasby and Caistor before we zoom out and explore the historic achievements of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his expedition to the Antarctic.

We are Artists

In art, children will be making digital collages inspired by a variety of different artists. In D&T, children will design and make their own stuffed toy of an Arctic animal using a variety of stitching techniques.

Computing

Children will be exploring flat-file databases.

RE

We will be exploring the LAS units: 'What do people believe about peace?' and 'What do we mean by religious and spiritual experiences?'

Music

Mrs Braithwaite will be teaching us music and we will compose our own piece of music based on the theme of our community.

PE

PE this term will be outdoors. We will be developing our skills in rounders and athletics.

PSHE

In PSHE we will be focusing on the SCARF units:

  • Being My Best
  • Growing and Changing (SRE unit).

Spanish

This term we will be learning the Spanish for days of the week and months of the year so that we can confidently say the date in Spanish. We will also be learning the nouns for common classroom items.
