Autumn Term in Class 2

This term our topic is

To infinity and beyond

Our essential question is

What would be your ideal planet?

Writing

During the Autumn term, children in Year 2 will continue to develop their writing skills with a strong focus on handwriting, sentence structure, and punctuation. They will practise writing sentences from dictation, paying close attention to the accurate use of capital letters, finger spaces, and a range of grammar features, including nouns, adjectives, expanded noun phrases, verbs and conjunctions.  The children will also learn how to expand their sentences, helping to build writing stamina and confidence as they grow into brilliant writers.

Reading

We will continue to apply our phonic knowledge and skills to confidently decode words. We will learn to read words with contractions (for example, I’m, I’ll, we’ll) and understand that the apostrophe shows where letters have been omitted. As our reading develops, we will deepen our understanding of stories by introducing new vocabulary and drawing on what we already know.

We will also enjoy reading our core texts, including Beegu, The Darkest Dark, Bob The Man on the Moon and Space poetry to inspire discussion, comprehension, and a love of reading.

Maths

In maths, we will be building our skills in place value, addition and subtraction and shape. We enjoy using a variety of practical maths tools, such as: cubes, numicon, part–whole models, 3D and 2D shapes, Hundreds square, number lines and much more. These tools help us to better our understanding and help bring our learning to life.

Science

We are scientists!

This term, we’re diving into the exciting world of biology and Chemistry! We’ll be exploring seasonal changes and learning all about Animals need for survival, Humans and Materials.

We will explore the differences between different animal groups, what makes us human and looking at different types of materials. We’ll discover how materials are used, how animals differ from each other and what group they belong to.

Get ready to observe, question, and discover—just like real scientists!

Other Learning

History, Geography and Art will be taught mainly through provision. The children will be able to explore this topic through their own learning and curiosity. In Geography we will be exploring the difference between human and physical features.
